CapriConnection und S.C.B – Ars moriendi

Ein Musiktheater über die Kunst des Sterbens

Philosophical discourse and Baroque music don't really seem to go together. Yet with this documentary production CapriConnection has created an impressive form of music theatre that combines these two very different phenomena in an amusing manner. Tübingen, Germany, 1983: a group of philosophers is discussing Baudrillard’s work Symbolic Exchange and Death. To the music of Henry Purcell’s Funeral Music for Queen Mary, the Swiss group discusses the repressed and yet omnipresent issue of death in our society.

CapriConnection & Schola Cantorum Basiliensis
Ars morendi is the product of collaboration between the Swiss theatre company CapriConnection and the Schola Cantorum Basilensis – University of Early Music in Basel. Twelve female singers and musicians drawn from the heart of the Schola Cantorum will recreate English baroque compositions dealing with the subject of death, being conducted by the internationally-renowned baroque expert, Anthony Rooley. Over the past few years, CapriConnection's theatre and opera director, Anna Sophie Mahler, has developed a method of mise-en-scène, which uses theatre and music for documentary material. In so doing, the documentary source material is not just explored in terms of its subject matter; it is also valued for its formal and rhythmic qualities, being woven together to create heavy compositions.
