Impulse award of the Goethe Institute: Gob Squad – „Saving the World“

Jury statement:

Gob Squad time and time again succeeds in capturing the seemingly banal details of our everyday lives. Last week the Rudolfplatz in Cologne was the location where they, together with many passers-by, recorded what to them appeared to be worth preserving. With their communicative charm and clever use of video technique they create a panorama of urban life in 2009. “Saving the World” is a theatre presentation that amuses, moves, and bewitches its audience. We hope that Gob Squad will question everyday life in many more places in this world, thereby creating an archive of what people in different countries and circumstances want to preserve for the future; an archive of the worlds that need to be preserved.

Gob Squad - „Saving the World“

“How should you lead you life so the world can sustain?” Gob Squad’s performers asked pedestrians in Cologne questions as such among others. With the camera running. Now you can see the results of their unconventional observations on screen. Without censorship.

A telling, contradictionary, and humorous survey on zeitgeist.

About Gob Squad

Gob Squad was formed by British and German artists in Gießen, Germany in 1994. Soon after, they were among the most formative performers in the international performance scene with their multi-media works. The permanent members of Gob Squad are: Johanna Freiburg, Sean Patten, Berit Stumpf, Sarah Thom, Bastian Trost and Simon Will. Other artists are invited to individual projects. The performances, which mainly take place in urban settings like train stations or shopping centres, reflect the absurdity and complexity of modern life while using experimental video and popular elements.
